This month’s book: Where the Crawdads Sing
CASA of Ohio Valley Book Club will read Where the Crawdads Sing for the month of July. This is a book of fiction, which we usually do not choose, but because this book has been so popular and because it addresses some topics that CASAs deal with, we chose this book for our summer selection.
Some of the themes that the main character, Kya, deals with are prejudice, resilience, family trauma, abandonment and loneliness. These are certainly themes that we all deal with in some form, but as advocates for neglected and abused children, we see these often. Our discussion will deal heavily with how Kya responds and how we as advocates can or should respond when working with the children we are appointed to serve.
CASA advocates are always searching for ways to more effectively help the families and children that we work with. We hope to be able to take this engaging story and apply some of the examples of success that we observe while also learning from aspects about the book that may have troubled us or where we believe we might be able to make a difference if faced with the same experience in the future.
